The Department of Public Works operates three citizen convenience centers to receive household trash and recyclable materials from households in Cumberland County. The convenience centers are strictly for residential use. A valid driver's license is considered proof that the customer is a resident. Commercial usage of the public use areas is a violation of the County Code and the Virginia Department Environmental Quality (DEQ) Solid Waste Management Regulations.
Locations & Hours of Operation

Items Not Accepted
To protect the health and safety of employees and our customers and also protect the environment, there are certain items that we cannot accept:
- Automotive or other lead acid batteries (may be recycled at retailers that sell automotive batteries)
- Hazardous items
- Pesticides or other farm chemicals
- Explosives or ammunition
- Oxygen, propane tanks or other pressurized tanks
- Used oil (may be recycled at retailers that sell motor oil)
- Oil based paint, gasoline and thinners
- Hot ashes or cinders
Due to the advent of individually packaged products intended for a single use such as water bottles, soda cans and snacks, we have exponentially grown our rate of trash production. These products are convenient for a population on the go, but they are also filling our landfills faster than ever. Recycling is an easy, common-sense way to divert many of the materials from the landfill, while also saving energy, money and slowing down our natural resource consumption. The county provides bins at each convenience center that allows the citizens of Cumberland the opportunity to recycle various items such as metal, plastic and paper.
Vehicle Donation/Recycling Information:
Tires can be brought to any of the three convenience centers. See the fee schedule below for tire disposal.

Appliances that do NOT have a compressor (washers, dryers, stoves, hot water heaters, microwaves, and dishwashers) can be brought to any convenience center. Appliances with compressors (refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners) can only be brought to the Madison District Transfer Station.
Only paint cans that are empty or containing dried paint can be brought to the convenience centers. Water based (latex) paint can be dried by leaving the lid off or absorbing the wet paint with kitty litter.
